Nördlingen is a city in Germany built in a meteorite crater

In Germany there is an unusual city called Nerdlingen, the historical part of which is located on the square, which has the correct round shape. For a long time it was believed that these were the remains of an ancient volcano crater, but everything turned out to be much more interesting.

The small town of Nördlingen is located in Bavaria, in southwestern Germany. The historical part of the city is located in the hollow - a small decrease in the area with a diameter of about 25 kilometers, which is called Nerdlingen Rice As studies have shown, the basin is the result of a meteorite impact. The meteorite allegedly fell here about 15 million years ago, that is, during the Neogene. The boundaries of the historical part of the city, coinciding with the edge of the meteorite crater, are clearly visible from a bird's eye view.

The city of Nördlingen was founded in the 9th century, has a centuries-old history and unique architecture. Most of the buildings in the city were built during the Middle Ages, so the city looks like an open-air museum.

In the city center is the Market Square, where the main streets of the city converge. The city wall around the perimeter of the city, which was built at the beginning of the XIV century, was perfectly preserved. The ancient wall has 12 towers and 5 gates, and is also a popular tourist attraction. In addition, there is an old building of the city hall, the Church of St. George, a meeting house and many other medieval buildings. After the discovery of the meteorite origin of the crater, a meteorite museum was created in the city.
