Relocation of beavers: why did Mongolia bring rodents from Russia and Germany

Despite the fact that Mongolia remains one of the most sparsely populated countries on the planet, it also faces environmental problems, which beavers help this time. Hardworking animals were brought to the country from Russia and Germany, and below we will describe how they can help Mongolia.

More than 1.4 million people live in the capital of the country, Ulan Bator, and this is more than 1/3 of the total population of Mongolia. And there is nothing surprising in the fact that a large city located in a semi-desert region, faced with the problem of drinking water supply. The capital receives most of the consumed water from the Tuul River, which experiences the negative effects of human activity. As a result of uncontrolled cutting of willow trees and pollution of the upper river, the water level in Tuul began to fall.

The settlement of beavers, according to experts, is an excellent way to improve the environmental situation in the river valley. By constructing dams, beavers contribute to the subsidence of excess river sludge, which causes shallowing of rivers. In those places where beavers settle, experts note an increase in the number of fish inhabitants. Mongolia has its own beavers, but they, unfortunately, are extremely rare and even listed in the Red Book.

To improve the situation in the upper reaches of the Tuul River, it was decided to populate the region with beavers. Kirov region and German Bavaria acted as suppliers of river rodents, from which a total of 29 beaver families were imported. Experts hope that the measures taken will help improve the situation in the Tuul River Valley.
