Crowned pigeons: where the most beautiful representatives live

Pigeons are not only gray birds familiar to us, walking around the streets and squares of our cities, but also 300 more species of representatives of the pigeon family, of the most diverse color, living all over the globe. Of course, the brightest and most unusual pigeons live in the tropics, and crowned pigeons, the most magnificent representatives of pigeons, are unanimously recognized as kings of the family.

Fan-shaped crowned pigeons (Goura victoria)

Crowned pigeons, and in total there are 3 species in this genus, live in only one region on Earth - on the island of New Guinea and on small neighboring islets. The main distinguishing feature of these pigeons, thanks to which they can be easily identified, is a chic fan of unusually beautiful feathers on the head.

Chestnut-chested Crowned Pigeon (Goura scheepmakeri)

The color of the feathers echoes the general shade of plumage, but has some color nuances, making this decoration of the pigeon's head looks like a creation of an artist. The appearance of these birds, as well as a measured leisurely walk, indicate that we are facing a real royal person.

Crowned Dove (Goura cristata)

These are quite large pigeons, which are 2 times larger in size than our gray pigeons. With a body length of up to 60-70 centimeters, they can weigh up to 2.5 kilograms, while for gray pigeons this figure does not exceed 350-380 grams. These birds feed on plant foods and small insects. During the flight, birds make a characteristic noise with wings, although in general they fly reluctantly, only in case of danger or if it is necessary to change the feeding place. These birds are also not able to fly long distances, for this reason they live only in New Guinea and on islands located nearby.

Crowned pigeons live in packs and within their community communicate through a series of sound signals, clicks, whistles and special tail movements. These are amazingly faithful birds: a couple is created for life, and with the advent of the next mating season, they are not looking for new partners. And even if, for some reason, one of the partners dies, the survivor will remain lonely for the rest of his life, remaining faithful.

The mild climate and the abundance of food contribute to a significant life expectancy - these pigeons can live up to 20 years. Perfectly breed in captivity, they are bred in many zoos in the world. At home, these birds can be found less and less, and they rise higher and higher into the mountains, because of the large size and chic appearance, they have become a welcome prey for poachers.
