Vikings could use bleach to become invincible

Everyone who knew the Scandinavian warriors knew about the bravery and ferocity of the Vikings. But among the Vikings stood out warriors who possessed incredible strength and fearlessness. They were called berserkers. According to legend, during the battles they fell into fury and rage, did not feel pain and could even attack their comrades. According to modern researchers, these Vikings could take special food to achieve such a state. An interesting hypothesis was put forward by a scientist from Slovenia, who suggested that this group of Vikings could purposefully use a poisonous plant called belena.

The image of a berserker in mythology

Karsten Fatur, a botanist and ethnographer, turned his attention to plants that can cause deviations in mental behavior. Since numerous descriptions of berserkers clearly indicate abnormal behavior, the scientist thought that such a condition could be caused artificially. Before an important battle, the berserkers took some kind of drug or ate plants that caused hallucinations, increased nervous irritability, up to the state of rabies. After some time, when the action of the mysterious substances took place, the berserkers plunged into another state: for several days they were silent and gloomy, their condition could be described as emotional devastation.

Since Karsten Fatur did not find any substances of mineral origin, he decided to focus on plants. For a long time, it was believed that the Vikings could use fly agaric - poisonous mushrooms that lead to the appearance of hallucinations and cause poisoning. But, according to the scientist, fly agarics could hardly be a miraculous plant of the Vikings for two reasons. Firstly, their influence cannot explain the unusual rage and ferocity that the berserkers demonstrated. And secondly, fly agarics are not so common in the vastness of Scandinavia in order to become such a popular dish among brave warriors.

Black henbane

Karsten Fatur suggested that berserkers could use black bleached. This plant was widespread not only in Scandinavia, but also on the vast territory of Eurasia. Many peoples were aware of its toxic properties and the fact that its use has a noticeable effect on the functioning of the nervous system. Black belena contains very strong alkaloids, due to which it has been used and continues to be used as a raw material for the manufacture of medicines. Most likely, the Scandinavian warriors also knew about it, since the description of the behavior of the berserkers correlates with the symptoms of poisoning after eating black bleached.
