27 photos about the life of Christians in Cairo

In Cairo, there are only 2 blocks where people professing Christianity live: Coptic and Manshiyat-Nasir, or the so-called City of garbage men. Today we will talk about the second district, located at the foot of Mount Mukattam and hidden from the eyes of tourists.

This quarter was given an unattractive name for its main activity, which is practiced by almost everyone here. Local residents - Coptic Christians - are called "zabaliny", they collect garbage from all over Cairo, the population of which is 15 million people, absolutely free. Inhabitants of the area bring all the garbage here, then sort it and recycle it. But this lesson is already paid, and very good!

Copts are stationed throughout Cairo with their donkey-drawn carts. On these carts they transport garbage bags to the nearest pickup trucks, which are already delivering cargo to the City of garbage men.

It is worth noting that this is not just an industrial area, namely a residential quarter, on the upper floors of buildings of which people live, everywhere you can find shops, cafes, pharmacies, hairdressers, etc. But basically every day here everyone is sorting tons of garbage.

We bring to your attention a series of photographs about the life of Christian scavengers in the capital of Egypt.
